Who were they? The changing “inhabitants” of a site in Egypt

Sara Orel

In the 1990s, Sara participated in an archaeological survey of a cliff site in Upper Egypt. The Gebel el-Haridi is an interesting place at the border of both ancient and modern provinces. Its tombs date from the Old Kingdom, about 2200 BCE, to Islamic times; its quarries to the New Kingdom, 1150 BCE. and Ptolemaic Period, 70 BCE; and a settlement and monastery in the Late Roman/Early Christian Period, 5th to 7th centuries CE. Although we have no names of the ancient inhabitants, we can reconstruct something of their lives from what they left behind. Sara will discuss who they were, and how we know what we know about them.
