What to Expect on Sunday
Whether you are new to Unitarian Universalism, moving here from another UU community, or returning to UUCL after a time away, we welcome your religious exploration and participation.
Accessibility & Accommodations
- You can attend Program and Worship either in-person or on Zoom, unless otherwise stated. Visit our Sunday Services pages for the most updated information.
- Live captioning is displayed in-person and on Zoom. Our sanctuary also has assisted listening devices available and large print hymnals, simply ask a greeter to use one!
- Our building is wheelchair accessible. The sanctuary is on the same level as the main entrance, there is an elevator for access to Founders Hall or the downstairs library, and ramps lead out to the patio.
- We have two gender neutral restrooms that are fully stocked with a variety of menstrual products.
- We have no particular dress code – some wear their Sunday best while others wear what is most comfortable!
Program at 9:15 am
Our Tradition Program, a legacy since 1957, seeks to contribute to our community life by:
- Presenting a diversity of programs to our membership,
- Maintaining a format that is participatory and engaging for a variety of ages and interests,
- Reflecting the concerns our members share for the Lawrence community, as well as for people throughout the world.
Presentations vary from history to current events to performing arts to social justice and more! The Order of Service usually includes announcements, a Chalice Lighting, Joys and Concerns, the presentation by the guest speaker, followed by questions and discussion.
Juice & Java
People of all ages are invited to gather up in Founders Hall for beverages (coffee, tea and juice) and light snacks from 10:15 to 10:55 a.m. Chat upstairs or grab your goodies to head outside for conversation.
Worship at 11:00 am
We gather in worship to find meaning and live more deeply. Worship creates connections within, among, and beyond us, calling us to our better selves, calling us to live with wisdom and compassion.
Unitarian Universalist worship styles vary by congregation, and even within congregations. Some congregations’ worship is contemporary and high tech. Some congregations’ worship is traditional and formal. Some features exuberant music, some includes long periods of silent reflection.
Our congregation’s worship celebrates our lives and times through music, story, reflections and rituals that hold our joys and sorrows. Our interactive services integrate participation by those attending in person and those on Zoom, as we use contemporary audio-visual systems to connect us all.
Elements of our Sunday morning worship service include:
- Words of welcome
- Lighting of a flaming chalice, the symbol of our faith
- A multigenerational segment, such as a “story for all ages”
- Music, both instrumental and vocal and in a variety of styles
- A time for lifting up the joys and concerns of the congregation
- A meditation or prayer
- Readings – ancient or contemporary
- A sermon given by our Developmental Minister, a guest speaker, or a member of the congregation
- An offering, collecting financial donations for our monthly Community Connections (local or statewide organizations doing work that important to our UU values).
From time to time, worship services incorporate holiday celebrations, longer musical performances, child dedications, coming-of-age ceremonies, youth-led services, and more! We offer childcare and learning programs for children and youth during the Worship service.
